A job well done.. a forever home and a rescue

A Dog loving neighborhood and immediate help from a vet helped goes a long way!!!

My neighbour called me about an hour and half back saying that there is a puppy stuck in one of our neighborhood blocks. Can you help? Let me come and see was the immediate response. Just as I stepped out of the house, shrieks of pain could be heard and i ran towards the spot. A 3-4 month old stray was tangled (literally) in the barbed wire of the bungalow compound. Her pain was apparent, salivating through the mouth like crazy, gulping down all the water that was kept for her, she was just struggling to free herself. But in that entire process, she just kept worsening the tangle as she kept going back and forth.

There was no question of anybody trying to touch her, coz she was in no mood. So initially we tried the “tie a rope” muzzle. Not working. Just then, another neighbour uncle came up with the idea of covering her mouth/head with a pillow cover. So a bit of a tussle and some serious cries, we put the pillow cover on her head and in exactly 2 minutes, she calmed down, as she knew help was on her way.

Simultaneously, a few calls to the vet- Dr Shivshankar Chikodi (from Dr Hatekar’s team) to explain the situation were made and he promised to be here asap. A few wire cutters got down to work to cut the barb wire and free her from the tangle. All thru this, the kiddo with the pillow cover on her head, was calm.

Just then the Dr. Shivshankar arrived and gave her the sedative. 5 minutes down the line, the girl was knocked out and the wire cutters started their job again. A few twists and a few turn, we pulled out 3 pieces of iron barb wire. The good thing was, all were cuts just through the skin layer and nothing in the flesh, which meant she would recover real soon. That was only good news in an otherwise bad situation.

The wound was inspected and we figured it wasn’t a very major one. Just as we started cleaning the wound, our feisty little girl got up. A few snarls and a few growls later, she just decided to jump up and flee. Her family was on the otherside of the compound, waiting for her to join them.

And such ended a 2 hour “free the pup” project. At the end of it, we realized we were almost 12 of us who had gathered and tried to help in someway or the other. Some were holding torches, some were fanning us so we wouldn’t be bitten by mosquitoes and some were there as they just couldn’t sleep at home after hearing the pup cry out for pain. As soon as ms puppy ran away, there was cheering and sighs of relief. Thank you to the Vet flowed endlessly and the vet just smiled.

And on a happier note- We had posted 2 puppies for adoption about 2 months back. One of the pups had already found a home, but Chips the last one left has finally found his forever home and he is now moved in with his new family. Hope keeps up going and there is no room for losing it 🙂
